Message to the Royal Photographic Society Japan Chapter

I would like to extend my congratulations to the Royal Photographic Society Japan Chapter (RPSJ) on the launch of its revamped website to usher in a new era, 26 years after its establishment in 1996.

My interaction with the RPSJ dates back to February 2014 when the RPSJ worked together with Embassy colleagues on an exhibition of old photos of the Embassy.  I was the Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at that time.  My colleagues had uncovered some long-forgotten historical materials at the Embassy, including many glass-plate negatives depicting the Embassy’s premises up to 100 years ago.  They sought the advice of experts in Japan, including Mr Yoshio Miyake, Chair of the RPSJ.  They soon came up with the wonderful idea of organising a joint photo exhibition.  I understand that the task of printing photos from glass negatives that were over 90 years old turned out to be quite a challenge!

When I visited the joint exhibition held in Ginza, the venue was bustling with visitors.  I was delighted that they had the opportunity to see these precious photos documenting the history of the Embassy, which has been located at No 1 Ichiban-cho in Chiyoda Ward since 1872.  I look forward to opportunities to work together again in the future.

Finally, I would like to express my hope that the refreshed website will attract new younger members who will bring fresh energy to the RPSJ through their activities and photography.

英国王立写真協会日本支部（The Royal Photographic Society Japan Chapter:  RPSJ）が、1996年の設立から26年を経て新たな時代を迎えるにあたり、ウェブサイトを刷新されたことを心よりお慶び申し上げます。

私とRPSJとの関わりは、2014年2月に弊館とともに取り組んだ写真展に始まります。当時、私は公使でした。同僚たちが弊館で、100年前の大使館の様子を記録する多くのガラス板のネガなど、長く忘れ去られていた歴史的な資料を発見しました。彼らは、RPSJ理事長の三宅善夫様など、日本の専門家の方々からの助言を求めました。そして、合同写真展という素晴らしいアイデアが浮上しました。90年以上前のガラス板のネガからの写真印刷は、非常に困難な作業だったことでしょう。

銀座で開かれた合同写真展は、大勢の入場者で賑わっていました。1872年以来、千代田区一番町1を拠点にする弊館の歴史を貴重な記録写真で多くの方々にご覧いただけたことは光栄でした。今後もご一緒できる機会があればと願っております。

最後に、刷新されたウェブサイトが、様々な活動や写真撮影を通じてRPSJに新たなエネルギーをもたらす若い世代の新規会員を多く誘うことを祈念いたします。
